Rocklin Business walk visits 274 local businesses

Business Walk participants Vice Mayor Scott Yuill, Bernie Lenau and Kristi Beard
The Metro Chamber partnered with the Rocklin Area Chamber of Commerce, the City of Rocklin and Placer County to find ways to support area businesses during these historically challenging times; never before has the need for this type of interaction been more imperative.
Fifty eight "walkers" visited 274 businesses today, including Rocklin vice mayor Scott Yuill and Rocklin councilmember Kathy Lund, as well as Jim Holmes and Robert Weygandt from the Placer County Board of Supervisors.
What resonated most among the participants was the Rocklin business community’s commitment to weathering the storm and meeting the challenges they face in the form of vacancies and slowed business. Business owners want their community to be successful and they want to personally be successful within their community. A full report will be ready for review in the weeks ahead.
The Metro Chamber's Business Walk brings together business and community leaders to visit businesses and ask three questions: How's business, what do you like about doing business in this area, and what can be done to improve business? From these questions, business and government agencies are able to act on requests and needs as part of the Metro Pulse program.

Sacramento region gears up for "marine highway" system
Cargo to be shipped by barge between
Port of Oakland and Port of West Sacramento

Alex Yeros of Eco-Transport outlines benefits of shipping containers by barge | Photo By Riverview Media Photography
Capital Public Radio Interview of Port Director Mike Luken | Listen
Very soon, you will see barges loaded with containerized cargo sailing into the Port of West Sacramento. This movement of goods is called the “marine highway” and it will help bring hundreds of new jobs to the region while improving air quality and reducing highway congestion by taking more than 1 million truck trips off area roads.
More than 100 business and civic leaders heard details of the “marine highway” outlined during the Northern California World Trade Center’s annual State of the Sea Ports event, held June 25 in West Sacramento. | More

International trade and commerce
lead the Vancouver economy

Study the Gateway to the Pacific- Aug. 19-22

As the main western terminus for Canada’s transcontinental highway and rail routes, as well as host to the largest deep-water harbor on the west coast of the Americas, Vancouver is the Canadian gateway to the Pacific Rim. Combining its infrastructure strengths with a highly educated, multi-cultural workforce — the highest percentage of foreign-born residents of any city in the world — Vancouver has enjoyed tremendous recent growth in international business and trade.
Specifically Vancouver has Canada's largest and most diversified port, trading $75 billion in goods annually. It is home to a variety of different industries, including the mining, forest, biotech, film and software industries. While still being guided by sustainable land use plans, the region has been dynamic as an efficient, effective and integrated supply chain that connects business to one of the largest free trade zones in the world.
The time is NOW to learn how to affect your business and community by example- join community leaders in Vancouver Aug. 19-22. Click here for more details.

Cap-to-Cap Efforts Continue to be Effective
Rep. Doris Matsui Announces $1 Million for Local Youth Development

Over the last four years the Workforce Development and Education Committee has supported a position at Cap-to-Cap to bring Department of Labor YouthBuild Grant funds to Sacramento. In January, the Sacramento Regional Conservation Corps submitted a grant proposal in partnership with the Sacramento Chapter of Rebuilding Together, a national non-profit, and on June 12th, Congresswoman Doris Matsui’s office announced that $1,099,137 was awarded to Sacramento Regional Conservation Corps to provide job training and educational opportunities for at-risk youth between the ages of 16 and 24.
“These federal funds will be used for public work and community development,” said Congresswoman Matsui. “This money is going exactly where it needs to go.”
The continued and cooperative effort of our community at Cap-to-Cap, and at the local and state levels, allows for big investments and projects to affect our region and our economy. For more information about the grant, get details here.
